1905-1977    72 yrs old

George Mann was born on December 2, 1905 in Hollywood, California, as George Kline Mann.

He was an actor, known for Broadway Thru a Keyhole (1933),  Neptune's Daughter (1949) and The Senator Was Indiscreet (1947). He was married to Barbara Bradford. He died on November 23, 1977 in Santa Monica, California.

George Mann was a prolific, excellent stereo photographer and inventor.  He shared his stereo slides in custom made, technically impressive viewers all over the country. Friends with Bill Lear, of later Lear Jet fame, the Lear, Inc. factory in Santa Monica provided George with all of the resources that he required to build his amazing  sequential stereo viewers.

We never met George Mann. He died in November of 1977.

However, shortly after his passing he became a part of our 3-D lives.

In December of that year we went to a "Swap Meet" in the Los Angeles area. When we were looking around, at one point we saw a small box-shaped item with what looked like stereoscopic viewer lenses sticking out of it. Our hearts started to pound.

The seller explained to us that it was made by a neighbor of his who had passed away. We were able to open it up, to look inside, and could see that it had a rotating drum that would hold a dozen Stereo Realist size slides, held in place by a thick rubber band made from a tire tube. It had an electric motor to rotate the slide drum, and buttons on the front labeled "Hold to See" and "Press to Change".

The price was right, so we bought it right away. Then the seller told us he had more of these viewers in the garage of the man who had passed away. He told us the man's name was George Mann, and that he had made these viewers in the 1950s as a commercial enterprise. He also told us that George Mann had also been an actor, and was the model for "King Vitaman" on the cereal box.

We made a date to meet at the garage some days later. The garage, located in Santa Monica, California, faced an alley. We met the seller out front, and then drove around to the garage.

Inside there were about 35 of the same motorized 3-D sequential viewers. There were also pedestals, with cast iron bases, that the viewers could be mounted on, for viewing the slides while in a standing position. Everything was covered with a heavy layer of dust.

By then we had cleaned up the first viewer that we had bought, figured out how it worked, and loaded it with a dozen slides. While not easy to install the slides, once in place it turned out to be a very nice motorized sequential 3-D slide viewer! So we knew that we could do something with all of these viewers, if we could get them at a reasonable price.

In the end we bought all of the viewers. Because of their heavy weight and bulk, we only had the space in our car for one of the pedestals, which sank a couple feet deeply into the back seat of our car. It was a heavy item! (We found out later that the rest of the pedestals had been immediately sold as scrap metal).

Over the course of the next month we opened and cleaned all of the viewers, and tested them to be sure the motor was advancing the slide drum properly. Once that was done we put an illustrated ad in the February 1978 issue of "Reel 3-D News". We offered them at $40 each plus $4 shipping.

They must have sold quickly, because we never placed a second ad to sell the viewers!

The seller explained to us that George Mann had a business where he took 3-D slides of various scenic subjects, filled the viewers with images, and then rented them out to restaurants, doctors or dentists offices, bars, or other businesses to offer as a diversion while waiting for a table, or in the waiting room of an office. They were also used at Trade Shows. The viewers were designed to be mounted on the pedestals with a single hex bolt underneath. Every couple of weeks he would move each viewer from one location to the next, so that every location would have a fresh set of images for viewing every couple of weeks.

That was the last we knew of George Mann until 2012, after home computers, the Internet, and search engines like Google had become commonplace.

One day Susan decided to do an Internet search on George Mann, and found a web site about George that had been created by the the Los Angeles Visionaries Association. It was aptly titled "George Mann's Lost Los Angeles".  It had a lot of fascinating information on George that we didn't know anything about, so we contacted the organization.

Susan wrote to the contact information on that web site, explaining about the viewers that we had bought (we kept three for ourselves).

A lot of correspondence ensued. We learned that George had also become a commercial 3-D photographer in the early 1950s, and had taken thousands of 3-D Kodachrome slides (Realist format) of restaurants, coffee shops, car shows, home and business interiors, tourist attractions, nude studies, travel agencies, children, animals  and more.

George's son, Brad, and his wife Dianne, were living in Berkeley, CA at the time, and we happened to be going on a trip to that area. We made a date to visit them!

It turned out that they had all of his 3-D slides, including all of the many sets that had gone into the viewers that we had bought. They had licensed 2D versions of many of the slides to be used on greeting cards, and also had put many of them on the Internet.

When we brought up the subject of putting them on the Internet in 3-D, they didn't know how to do that.

Susan offered to scan them, and make side-by-side digital versions of them (along with other variations of 3-D formats, for other uses. Over the span of a few years, they sent us small groups of slides, which Susan scanned, re-formated, made a disk for them, and sent them right back.

In November 2012 we were asked to contribute to a presentation at the Los Angeles Public Library downtown LA.

The description of the show was: "The Los Angeles Visionaries Association and On Bunker Hill time travel blog in association with the Los Angeles Public Library Photo Collection and Photo Friends present George Mann's Lost Los Angeles , a celebration of a newly-discovered treasure trove of mid-century photographs captured by the one-time Vaudeville dance sensation, and projected for the first time tonight in stunning 3-D Kodachrome. Join us as historian Richard Schave (Esotouric) and Nathan Marsak (On Bunker Hill) contextualize the places, 3-D experts Susan Pinsky and David Starkman (Reel 3-D) demystify the format's history and technology, and Bunker Hill native son Gordon Pattison takes us on a virtual tour of his beloved neighborbood, while Dianne Woods shares the story of her father-in-law George Mann's life and her work with his best images."

It was a fun opportunity to show these remarkable stereo images, that you're seeing here of the old Bunker Hills region, before it was bull-dozed down and remade into tall buildings.

According to Wikipedia, "in 1955, Los Angeles city planners decided that Bunker Hill required a massive slum clearance project. The Health department of Los Angeles also called the area a health hazard for its city. This led to the displacement of many families and removal of many of the low income residents of the area.

The redevelopment was slated to preserve the historical buildings of Bunker Hill, but instead they were demolished since there was no actual rehabilitation planned."

Fortunately, George Mann documented some of what still remained before it was lost forever. Bunker Hill today bears no resemblance at all to it's original residential Victorian glory.

Thankfully George Mann documented many of the beautiful old residences before they were demolished. I am happy to include a few of the images here.

King Vitaman Face

George Mann King Vitaman 2.jpg
George Mann King Vitamin 1.jpg

Watch him as King Vitaman on youtube:

The second mascot for King Vitaman cereal was a man dressed as a king. This mascot replaced the original illustrated king in 1971, only a year after the first mascot was introduced.

Playing the part of King Vitaman II was actor George Mann. It's interesting to note this mascot's crown made of golden spoons and a checkered tablecloth.

It's also amusing to look at pictures of King Vitaman II with the inside knowledge that the man who played him struggled with alcohol problems. Expert make-up artists were routinely called in to cover his red nose and brighten his tired, droopy eyes.

George Mann passed away in 1977. From cancer in Santa Monica.

The Watts Towers were built by Italian immigrant Simon Rodia on his triangular lot in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Watts over the course of 33 years. Rodia began work on The Watts Towers around 1921. Work continued until 1954 when the structures were declared by their creator to be finished. They're still there and well worthy of a visit when in Los Angeles.
